City of Thomasville – Rains Road Pump Station Improvements

The existing Rains Road Pump Station is a 362,000 gallon per day (GPD) triplex submersible pump station constructed in 1988.  While the concrete structures remain in good condition, the mechanical and electrical equipment at the pump station is in need of replacement.  Alley, Williams, Carmen, & King, Inc. completed pump station testing that revealed a significant need to increase the pump station capacity.  The Rains Road Pump Station Upgrade project includes upgrading the existing pump station and replacing the existing forcemain to increase the pump station capacity to 1,000,000 GPD.  The pump station upgrade work includes demolition of all existing mechanical and electrical equipment, installation of new electrical and mechanical components for a 1,740 gallon per minute pump rate, installation of a new automatic barscreen, and installation of a new permanent back-up diesel pump.  The forcemain upgrade work includes the installation of approximately 4,900 linear feet (LF) of ductile iron pipe forcemain, increasing the size from 8-inch to 16-inch.  This work also includes crossing I-85 Business with a 30” steel casing installed using bore and jack construction methods.  A major hurdle with this project is the need to keep the existing pump station operational during construction, with construction sequencing being instrumental in the minimization of temporary work required.
