It is with heavy hearts that we inform our friends, clients and community that the last surviving original member of Alley, Williams, Carmen & King, Inc Herbert A. Carmen (Herb) passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021 at the age of 92. Herb graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and moved to North Carolina in 1953 and in 1960 was a founding principal of Alley, Williams, Carmen & King, Inc., in Burlington. Herb served as AWCK’s Corporate Secretary and Head of Architecture from 1960 until his retirement in 1996.

Herb was instrumental in designing many commercial and industrial and medical buildings, as well as schools throughout Alamance County and surrounding communities. Herb served his community through his church (First Presbyterian of Burlington), where he was an ordained deacon and elder. He was also involved in various civic and community organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America (Troop 17), the Burlington YMCA (past president) and the Burlington Rotary Club (50+ year member, past president and Paul Harris Fellow).

Herb is survived by his wife (Fleta), his children (Eve, Andy and Patti), eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Carmen will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington but date and time are pending. The service will be live streamed at fpcburlington.org/live-streaming.
